Kathleen Clarke, wife of Thomas Clarke, a signatory of the Proclamation and subsequently executed for his part in the Rising, was a founder member of Cumann na mBan. They had three children together.

Thomas Clarke forbade his wife to have an active part in the Rising.

Pregnant on her 4th child Kathleen visited her husband in prison

before he was executed. She lost the baby shortly afterwards.

She set up the Irish National Aid fund to help the families of those executed or imprisoned  after the Rising and she became an active member of Sinn Féin.

In 1918 she was arrested and imprisoned for 11 months in Holloway Prison, England where she made infant shoes.
